Bienvenue à Montréal. Welcome to Montreal Chapter!
The city of Montréal is one of Canada's most unique and lively cities, offering a perfect blend of the old and new. It is also the second largest French speaking city in the world after Paris, but don't worry—over half the population also speaks English. Culturally, there are few cities that beat it. Among its internationally renowned festivals are the Montréal Just for Laughs Festival, a comedy show that attracts thousands every year, and the Montreal Jazz Festival, which features around 400 different shows and attracts jazz greats from around the world. The number of museums located in and around the city number is daunting, and includes notable names like the McCord Museum of Canadian History. Montreal is home to world class academic and research activities. One of the world’s most prestigious universities – McGill University is here, other reputable universities in Montreal include: Concordia University; University of Quebec at Montreal to mention a few. Other historically significant sites around Montreal include the Notre-Dame Basilica, one of the largest cathedrals in North America. Shoppers will swoon at the sight of Montreal's downtown core, which has over 3,000 shops and services, most of which are conveniently centered within Ste-Catharine Street underground city – the largest underground city in the world.
Over the years Nigerians have played significant roles in the development of this city and the Province of Quebec in general. Early arrivals from Nigeria to Montreal date as far back as before the Nigeria became an independent state in 1960. This is how long our history as Nigerian date back to in Montreal. Nigerians have contributed in the development of Montreal and the greater Quebec province working in key sectors such as health delivery; banking and finance; law and jurisprudence; academics and research; politics; commerce; as well as religion. The formation of the Nigerian Canadian Association (NCA) in Montréal dates back to the 1980s. Montréal is now home to over two thousand Nigerians and their offspring.
